For the future

What's Next

Although we understand this technology quite well at this point, we believe that more research could be done to test the effectiveness of the device in varying conditions.

For the next group to tackle this project, we have designed an experiment. The most important part is confirming whether the amount decided on by the previous research groups (1 part desiccant to 3 parts food, by mass) is ideal.

For this experiment, the materials you will need are:

​

  • Many standard-weight silica gel packets

  • Varying sizes of Ziploc bags

  • A humidity sensor

  • A temperature sensor

  • A timer

  • A grain food: both rice and flour should be tested, as they are staples of the Sierra Leone diet.

  • A metal bucket with a lid

  • A hot, humid area - possibly a steam room/sauna? Or a miniaturized version of one.

For each size of ziploc bag, fill multiple with rice, and multiple with flour. Then, add varying weights of desiccant to each bag, along with a humidity sensor. Record the weight of desiccant and the weight of grain food. Place in a hot, humid environment. Record humidity data over time, and check for signs of mold or moisture in the food. Analyze data to find out which combination was most effective for removing humidity and keeping the food safe to eat.

Also, it would be useful to look into methods of recharging Silica gel packets with the cooking tools that are used in Sierra Leone.
